as Judas in JESUS CHRIST SUPERSTAR
“This JCS is driven by the sheer power of the voices and performances of the cast and by King’s fresh look at the familiar material.
Appreciation of those powerful voices must start with the incredible Christopher J. Deaton as Judas whose voice could probably put a few cracks in a pillar or two. However, it is the emotion behind that voice brings out all the conflict and torment of the character and creates true sympathy for the most notorious traitor of all time.” - Doug Sturdivant
“The show centers on Jesus Christ’s days before his crucifixion. Christopher J. Deaton played Judas as a man with deep layers and conflict giving him many different sides and perspectives.” - Dallas Voice
as Robert Kincaid in THE BRIDGES OF MADISON COUNTY
“Christopher J. Deaton is Robert Kincaid, who finds his way to Francesca’s farm while looking for a bridge to photograph. Deaton gives Robert a quiet, appealing masculinity and one can easily see why Francesca is drawn to this worldly, yet humble, man. And that voice.”- Doug Sturdivant
“Christopher J. Deaton is a powerful tenor who commands the stage in numbers such as ‘The World Inside a Frame’ and the emotional ‘It All Fades Away,’ arguably the most moving song of the entire production.” - Ramona Harper
as the Emcee in CABARET
“Our guide from start to finish is the Emcee of the Kit Kat Club, Lyric Stage executive artistic director Christopher J. Deaton—a muscled, alluring hunk of whatever-gender-you-prefer as he ‘Willkommen’s’ us to leave our hang-ups on the curb, and to stomp and whistle at the beautiful people on the stage.
Deaton, more often the handsome romantic tenor in Lyric productions, reveals the breadth of his acting skills as the Emcee. Pared down to I-can-do-that dancing weight, his head shaved and shining, and wearing a muscle shirt split to the navel to reveal an enviable six-pack, he preens and flirts like an androgynous peacock. He’s hilarious and bawdy singing ‘Two Ladies,’ and sports the longest legs in the chorus line singing ‘Money,’ that cynical anthem to capitalism.
Later, he’s downright sinister dancing with a costumed ape in ‘If You Could See Her,’ with its chilling anti-semitic finish line. From his mincing, ebullient start to the show’s sagging, dark finish, Deaton delivers the feel and the fate of a self-deluded society teetering on collapse.”- Martha Heimberg
as Tateh in RAGTIME
“…terrific tenor Christopher J. Deaton delivers an unfailing Yiddish accent… Deaton’s struggling Jewish immigrant is strongest in scenes with his little daughter (perky Allison Arroyo on the night we reviewed; she alternates with Megan Arroyo). He ties her to his own wrist, so she won’t go astray in the big city. His rendition of ‘Gliding,’ sung to cheer the child up, builds in tenderness and charm until he convinces us all that a happy ending is just around the corner.” - Martha Heimberg
as Sky Masterson in GUYS & DOLLS
“Handsome high-stakes gambler Sky Masterson, played by Lyric Stage’s longtime heartthrob and terrific tenor Christopher J. Deaton, is passing through town and takes a bet that turns the plot of the show. … Deaton is masculine and strong as Sky, his voice blending lovingly with Lutz’s Sarah in duets like ‘I’ve Never Been in Love Before.’ He’s all assurance and tough-guy timing in his big solo number, ‘Luck Be a Lady,’ singing to his muse while blowing on the dice in his hand and raising a knowing eyebrow to the babes in the audience.” -Martha Heimburg
“Christopher J. Deaton played Sky Masterson with panache and ease, singing beautifully, as always, and looking suitably dashing. He and Ms. Lutz had real chemistry that payed off in their scenes and duets.” - Chris Jackson
as Jervis Pendleton in DADDY LONG LEGS
“Samantha McHenry and Christopher J. Deaton deliver resplendent performances. … Their chemistry is extremely believable…allowing the audience (to) sincerely feel their emotions. Both have luxurious singing voices. … Christopher J. Deaton delivers his best work that I have seen him do in this production. He wears his characterization like a second skin. Deaton also happens to have the best song of the entire night titled ‘Charity.’ For this ballad that has a country flavor, Deaton’s tenor vocals soar and glide within the song with roaring force, then subside to a soft falsetto—just an exquisite solo that became the vocal highlight of the evening.”- John Garcia
as Sir Galahad, Black Knight, & Herbert’s Father in SPAMALOT
“As Sir Galahad/The Black Knight/Prince Herbert's Father, Christopher J. Deaton once again proves his status as a local theatre treasure. His booming baritone voice so strongly rivals his impeccable comedic timing that it is hard to say which is his greater strength. In fact, he is so versatile that he is nearly unrecognizable as he changes from role to role. His duet with The Lady of the Lake, ‘The Song That Goes Like This,’ hilariously demonstrates his charm and wit, but also offers some gut-busting moments, which I won't spoil in writing.” - Kyle Christopher West
as Robert Mission in THE NEW MOON
“The book…focuses on French nobleman and revolutionary Robert, made sexy and daring by Christopher J. Deaton, a strong, flexible baritone with a smoldering glance and a sudden joyous smile that reaches the back of the hall in his ode to his beloved, ‘Marianne.’ … Deaton and Lassiter, romantic leads to sigh for, are electric in “Wanting You” and “Lover, Come Back to Me.” They continue to make beautiful music together after their recent performance in the lead roles of Lyric Stage’s award-winning The Golden Apple. The recording of that show, for sale in the lobby, was recently named one of last season’s top ten internationally by Opera Magazine.” - Martha Heimburg
“Deaton brings rich timbre and vulnerable delivery to the story of an idealistic French nobleman, Robert, who believes in liberté, egalité, fraternité before the French Revolution. On the run from France, where he committed the crime of killing noblemen in defense of a peasant, he falls in love with Marianne (Lassiter), the beautiful but proud daughter of an aristocrat for whom he labors, in disguise, as a servant. Lassiter’s flawless, crystalline soprano soars. Reuniting with Deaton, her co-star from Lyric’s 2014 lovely production of Romberg’s The Desert Song, brings an added depth of intimacy that suits a complex courtship that travels a winding road over perceived class differences, political polarities and time.” - Nancy Churnin
as Baron Felix Von Geigern in GRAND HOTEL
“The most suspenseful theatre scene I’ve watched this year takes place near the end of Act One, when the financially challenged, opportunistic Baron Felix Von Gaigern (Christopher J. Deaton) climbs outside the railing on the second story balcony to creep perilously across its full length in half light to enter another guest’s room. Deaton is a strong singer for this type of multi-dimensional work that Lyric Stage frequently mounts, as clearly demonstrated in the Act One finale duet, “Love Can’t Happen”. Watching him climb out over the balcony railing to inch across its length with no safety harness visible, a bold, unanticipated demonstration of agility and risk, astonishes the viewer and whets the appetite for the romantic duet he masters eloquently with Elizavera Grushinskaya (Mary-Margaret Pyeatt).”- Alexandra Bonifield
“…Lyric’s production is superbly cast with local musical theater pros giving spectacularly good performances… The slightly larcenous baron (Christopher J. Deaton) befriends Otto Kringelein (achingly fine Andy Baldwin), (and) their joyous duet at the bar, ‘We’ll Take a Glass Together,’ is, as it was on Broadway, the highlight of an evening crowded with great singing and dancing.” - Elaine Liner
“The Baron, a handsome young nobleman, is trying to live a privileged life he can no longer afford. In addition to charm and a powerful voice, Christopher J. Deaton conveys touching surprise as his character discovers his capacity to love.” - Nancy Churnin
“The strongest center of this tornado of storylines is the buzz surrounding the debonair young Baron von Gaigern (the handsome, virile tenor Christopher J. Deaton), a penniless aristocrat and sometimes thief whose high-living lifestyle is financed by his escalating debt to menacing mobsters. He stuns himself by falling for the aging ballerina Elizaveta (a delicate, petulant Mary-Margaret Pyeatt), whose love of dance is rejuvenated by his attentions. The love affair happens fast, like everything else in this show, but the chemistry between the two is convincing, and their duet, the melodious ‘Love Can’t Happen,’ generates some real heat.” - Martha Heimberg
as the Wolf & Cinderella’s Prince in INTO THE WOODS
“Christopher J. Deaton and Anthony Fortino steal scenes as charming princes whose eyes twinkle and legs leap rather than walk. Deaton’s deep, fine voice proves riveting in his double role as the lascivious wolf. “Hello, Little Girl,” he sings and hello, wolf, you can feel the audience respond.” - Nancy Churnin
“Both princes are models of arrogant, handsome, charming, shallow manhood. Deaton, as Cinderella’s Prince, is truly and comically confused by a second-act world where ‘faithful’ and ‘sincere’ are suddenly introduced into the story. Who wished for this? Anthony Fortino, a terrific singer and magnetic stage presence in any role, is marvelously upbeat and determined as Rapunzel’s Prince… Deaton and Fortino make a wicked comic team, comparing princely notes on the pleasures of chasing women or singing of the ‘Agony’ once you’ve caught one and installed her in the palace.” - Martha Heimberg
“As her persistent prince, Christopher J. Deaton is ardent and haughty, but he truly shines when staving off his carnal desires in his other role as the Wolf.” - Lindsey Wilson
as Ulysses in THE GOLDEN APPLE
“Fortunately, Lyric Stage had a generally excellent cast to carry this off. If this is strictly local talent, it is of a remarkably high level. Best is Christopher J. Deaton as Ulysses, who wields his handsome light baritone and clear diction with masculine elegance. As his Penelope, Kristen Lassiter offers a sense of stoic nobility and an appropriately furious tirade when Ulysses finally makes his long-overdue return to her.” - Eric Myers
“Christopher J. Deaton’s vibrant baritone conveys a Ulysses torn between devotion and desire to explore, while Kristen Lassiter brings a sweet, strong soprano to knowing and anguished Penelope.” - Review of PS Classics Two-Disc Recording
“Christopher J. Deaton gives his strongest performance I’ve seen yet as the strait-laced but always very human male lead Ulysses, respectfully attentive to his wife Penelope yet eager for adventure in shady Rhododendron. The richness of his voice, masculine yet full of loving warmth, wins the audience as easily as it keeps Penelope enthralled. … Christopher J. Deaton’s soulful delivery of ‘Ulysses’ Soliloquy’ near the end brings the audience back down to Earth from the hyperactive exuberance of earlier scenes to the reflective depth of emotion that floats beneath the show’s frothy madcap excess.” - Alexandra Bonifield
“Under Stefan Novinski’s insightful direction, the love story of Ulysses and Penelope, poignantly conveyed by the powerful voices of Christopher J. Deaton and Kristen Lassiter, anchors the tale.” - Nancy Churnin
